Who We Are
About
St Patrick’s is placed in the centre of Coleraine town, along the high street of Coleraine.
The present building was erected between 1883 and 1885 at a time when the Church of Ireland was recovering from the double blow of Disestablishment and Disendowment. According to tradition, St Patrick himself was the first to establish a place of Christian worship at this location some time in the 5th Century. Whether tradition is to be trusted or not, there is no doubt that there has been a church here for many centuries.
In 1995 the foundations of a church dating back at least to the 14th century were discovered and investigated by archaeologists. The foundations of the 17th century church, built about 1614 were found to lie on top of these earlier medieval foundations. In 1992 a terrorist bomb devastated much of Coleraine town centre. Extensive restoration and renovation work costing around £1,000,000 was carried out on the church between 1995-1996.
St Andrew’s is situated within Ballysally and was consecrated in 1981 as a church plant of St Patrick’s.
In 1976 it was decided to purchase a portakabin and place it in the heart of Ballysally, which began wit people meeting one night a week, but in time there was a Sunday fellowship and Sunday School – it wasn’t long before the congregation started to outgrow it. In 1979, the decision to build a church on the site was agreed and since then has had weekly worship for the people of Ballysally.
